A date over more-than-a-dollar

With weekend dates getting more pricy with the increase of almost every other thing, it seemed like a must try when my ears got news of the $1 Thai boat noodles. The bf and I, being avid lovers decided to give it a try.

It was fully packed on a Saturday night even when we reached at about 9PM.

Apart from the signature $1 boat noodles which draws most of the crowd to this little restaurant, they also have other dishes up for orders. We opted for the Mango salad which is approx $7 and tasted pretty good.

Loved the blend of the condiments for the salad sauce.

Thai ice tea which we found to be pretty diluted.

The original boat noodles ( ~$1) which swung to the sweet side and wasn't particularly to my liking.

The dried noodles ($1/$1.50) featured peanuts and pork ball, which was slightly better, but I just don't really fancy the idea of having my noodles being too sweet. It seemed to be a really simplified and budget version of Phad Thai.

Sliced pork, which turned out to be boiled pork done the shabu shabu way. Pretty simple and bland on its own, but it tasted quite awesome with the fish sauce and chilli blend which you can help yourself to near the front of the restaurant.

This was pretty much our order apart from the mango salad as our main aim was only to try the flavours.

Haboured the highest hopes on the Tom Yum boat noodles ($1.50) but it seemed to be nothing more than just the tom yam powder mixture, largely similar to those instant noodles packets.

It is almost one spoonful of kuey teow and condiments costing $1-$1.50.
If you multiply it by 3 for a food court price, it is pretty pricey for the little portion!

It's an interesting concept but we were not bought over by it. They do have their own share of fans as we spot tables (of 4) with stacked up bowls of what it seems to be over 30 bowls.

A little note, please do not come here if you are starving as there is a long queue even when we reached about 9PM on a saturday. It also took about 20mins or more for the boat noodles to be served. Perhaps it is a tactic to make you more hungry so you will order more?(:

Sushi Express Citylink review

Some time ago, after dropping off TDJ stocks at Kissjane Citylink, we spotted no queue at Sushi Express and decided to give it a try $1.50 per plate, so why not? Especially when its for a Friday dinner date in town.

For $1.50 per plate, it is pretty reasonable for me!

Sashimi slices for $1.50, of course with smaller sizes than usual restaurants

Tiny fish slice spotted in the Miso soup

Packed to the brim during dinner time

And that's pretty much what we had since the boy wasn't very hungry. The total bill worked out to $20ish, and there's no GST and service charge if I'm not wrong.

And no surcharge on the wet towels too

(:

Merry Christmas noms!

Helloooo! Merry Christmas everyone! How did you Christmas celebrations go?
I hope you guys have loads of fun! (:

Mine was a under the stars, seaside view with my boy cum personal chef :p
It's really quite a good escape from the crowd in town!

Our menu for the night. We ended up being stuffed with all the food despite our initial thoughts that it may not be enough!

Christmas eve menu:

- Johnsonville sausages garlic brats
-Har cheong gai
-Sambal fish and sotong
-Marinated pork belly and chicken bulgogi

And yes, after the charcoal is burning red ( though it can't be seen from here), it's time to start the food affair!

We first heard of Johnsonville sausages from the Flying Dutchman recommendation on the radio, and oh boy, did we not regret listening to it.

Juicy, savoury and oh so very good!

The rest of the raw cuts were all purchased from Cold Storage! What a life saver(:

Har Cheong Gai would be better if it was more salty. The marinated chicken bulgogi was definitely a winner, followed by the pork belly. The sambal fish and sotong were really spicy!

I didn't really fancy the fish as it has loads of bones and the meat turned out pretty dry.

Luckily the rain stopped before our food affair and it was a great combination of piping hot food and cool weather (:

How did you spend your Christmas eve?

Christmas dinner was a cosy gathering affair with our other halves and our king ( beloved dad)

The king had cravings for the soya chicken from crystal jade. So totally not Christmassy but we gave in to him :D

We tried baking meatballs with shoestring cheese

And seafood paella rice!
For those who have asked on instagram, here's the recipe we used!

We replaced clams with mussels, which is more authentic.

The colour wasn't as yellow/reddish as it should be probably because we used ikan billis stock which generated a grey tinge.

It's recommended to use Paella rice as we used normal steamed rice which resulted in an overly soft texture.

But the guys all loved this dish nonetheless(:

A last minute addition to the menu were these lobsters which were going at a resistible 1 for 1 deal from Cold Storage: $26.90 for 2

It's really right to not expect too much for this dish since it is frozen cooked lobster. The flesh was pretty tough and tasteless. But everything went well with the garlic butter lemon sauce that I cooked up. Oh boy, was that a hot favourite sauce for the night(:

Recipe for the sauce here if you are a garlic fan.
We chopped the garlic finely for this sauce instead of blending it as we were too lazy to wash another equipment

And our Christmas feast! We washed down the food with homemade Sangria with apple, lime and orange soaked in red wine done by my future sis-in-law.

It's pretty amazing how these fruits can save cheap red wine which have that tinge of bitter linger.
And the alcoholic content didn't taste so strong with the soaked fruits. Guess it will be a long-staying guest for our future gatherings(:

Simple pleasures of hawker food

Had a recent unexplanable craving for ee-mian. I'm no fan of soupy dishes, but definitely one of savoury gravy.

Pardon me for my flux of photos but I've recently gotten myself a Canon G7X powershot and I'm very much in love with it.It's able to capture the clarity and precision at low light areas. Not a pro, cam, it's good enough for me.

And Rojak, a missmash. A pity the you tiao was served cold as it is and not toasted to crisp, else it would have been so much more awesome.

It's definitely these simple hawker fare, that makes me can't migrate.

$7 bucks of simply joy
